In Epitaph, filmmaker Cecília Araneda returns to her long-estranged homeland and eco-develops a 16mm film using leaves and fruits gathered from her ancestral home, weaving a lament for her family’s past and the vanished landscapes of her home.

Shot in Chile and the Tablelands of Canada, a pivotal location for the modern understanding of plate tectonics, Epitaph incorporates eco-developed 16mm film, video, documents from public and private archives, and found footage to weave an epitaph to a home that is leaving the filmmaker behind, first through ex[ile].

Epitaph was ecologically developed in situ in a rural area of Chile, where the filmmaker’s father’s family lives, using boldo, figs, fig leaves, walnut leaves, apples, apple leaves, autumn grapes, grape leaves, olives, olive leaves, plums, scents.
