How do we read movies?
A film micro-analysis to approach cinema. Led by Aleix Rodríguez Gracia, PhD candidate from the CINEMA group at Pompeu Fabra University.
What do movies tell us? How do they construct what they make us feel, think, or remember? And how can we approach them as viewers? Based on these questions, the talk proposes a brief journey through film history to explore some of its expressive resources and the ways in which its language has developed.
Through classic filmmakers like Jean Renoir or Otto Preminger, and moving through more groundbreaking approaches such as those of Jean-Luc Godard, tools will be offered to understand how films articulate perspectives, relationships, and meanings. By focusing on elements such as characters, narration, mise-en-scène, or shot composition, an analytical approach will be applied to Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Céline Sciamma, 2019)—a contemporary example that allows us to observe how cinema generates emotions, constructs meaning, and guides our experience as viewers.
